Riccardo Di Cato

I am a PhD candidate in Economics at the University of California San Diego. I am interested in Development Economics and Political Economy, particularly in how formal and informal institutions interact in the process of development.

Prior to my doctoral studies, I was a Research Associate at Bocconi University and at Harvard University in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I also launched an entrepreneurial venture in the tourism industry.

I will be on the 2026–2027 Economics Job Market.

I received the Cindy Vojtech Summer Research Prize in Economics for job market candidates. I am also a co-founder of the Undergraduate Research Lab at UC San Diego and a co-founder and co-host of the Backstory Podcast.

Outside academia, I am a proud father of three, a role that has made the PhD journey especially rewarding.
